Piskopiano

Piskopiano is a traditional village of the Municipality of Hersonissos, with less than 500 inhabitants. It is located approximately 25 kilometers east of Heraklion. Piskopiano is situated between two other, equally beautiful villages: Koutouloufari and Ano Hersonissos, which are located 1 kilometer south of Limenas Harsonissou. The main occupation of the inhabitants is tourism and the cultivation of horticulture in greenhouses.

The village once belonged to the Episcopate of Herronissos, hence the name, which in the Byzantine era was the 4th in line of primacy. For the first time we come across the name Casale Piscopiano de Chersonisso in 1379. Among the attractions of the village are the post-Byzantine frescoes of the single- arched church of St John / Agios Ioannis (16th century) preserved just behind the church of Virgin Mary / Panagia (19th century).

Piskopiano village lies on the slopes of Mt Harakas, which makes the view of Hersonissos bay delightful from the Museum’s veranda.
