the MUSEUM
The Menelaos Parlamas Agricultural Museum & Theano Metaxas-Kanakakis Weavers' Collection, which is housed in a stone-built factory of the 19th century and a house (donated by the Parlamas family), was founded by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies in 1988.
The Collections of the Museum are thematically structured (wine press, rakokazano, bakery, agricultural tools, Cretan house, blacksmith shop, barrel shop, carpenter's shop, olive press, textiles and weaving tools), focusing on the cretan countryside and objects dating from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.
In 2011, after an extensive renovation and expansion (P.E.P. of Crete), the Museum acquired weaving wings with textiles from the Collections of Theano Metaxa-Kanakaki.
Rich visual material and digital media offer the visitor additional information and documentation of the exhibits.
The museum is accessible to people with disabilities,
it has a small shop, a temporary exhibition hall and rest areas.
